What is an Architectural Review Committee hearing?

An Architectural Review Committee reviews changes to buildings in a local preservation district — new construction, additions, demolition, and exterior alterations — and decides whether to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness.

The committee for that district decides. Its decision can be appealed to the Historic Landmarks & Preservation Districts Commission.

Office of Planning staff present the application, the committee hears from the applicant and the public, then approves, approves with conditions, or denies it. Written comments sent to the case manager named on the agenda go into the official case file.

A Certificate of Appropriateness is not a building permit; construction still needs the usual permits.
